Notes — overview
The Notes section brings together three kinds of material and the tools around them:
- notes — your own markdown text in a full WYSIWYG editor;
- documents — uploaded files with text extracted automatically, OCR included;
- recordings — audio from the microphone or a link, transcribed locally.
Plus a sticky-note board, templates and a shared bin. Everything here has full-text search, collections, and one bin for the whole app.
Files, not a database
Section titled “Files, not a database”A note is a markdown file on your disk, not a row in a closed database. Close Yttri and the files stay readable in any editor. The database is only an index: search, links, metadata.
Which means notes can be edited from outside. Yttri watches the folder and picks up external changes. If a file changed both in the app and on disk, Yttri notices the divergence instead of silently overwriting someone else’s edit — you get a “the note has changed” notice and repeat your edit.
Three columns
Section titled “Three columns”- The left panel — the list for the current section. It collapses with ⌘\ (Ctrl+\) and can be resized by dragging its edge.
- The middle — the editor or the viewer.
- The right panel — outline, history, tags and information. It collapses with ⌘⇧\ (Ctrl+Shift+\).
The submenu
Section titled “The submenu”Board · All notes · All documents · All recordings · Recent (changed in the last 7 days) · Templates · Bin — and Collections as a separate group.
The create button sits at the bottom of the submenu and changes its label with the current section: new note, new document, new recording, new template. With a collection open, a new note is created inside it.
The list and its cards
Section titled “The list and its cards”A card shows the title, an excerpt (the description, or a fragment of the text when there is none), a relative date and the collection with its colour dot. The magnifier next to the heading reveals search over titles, descriptions and tags; Esc closes it and clears the query.
- single click — a preview in the middle column;
- double click — open in its own tab;
- right click — the context menu.
The note context menu
Section titled “The note context menu”Open in a new tab · show in folder (when the note has a file on disk) · move to a collection · rename · duplicate · snapshot into documents · print · export to Markdown or HTML · send by email · delete.
“Snapshot into documents” saves the note’s current state as a separate document. The note carries on living and changing, and the snapshot outlives even its deletion.
Deleting is not final: the object goes to the bin and can be restored within 30 days.
Collections
Section titled “Collections”Collections are nested folders for notes, documents and recordings. They are created with the “+” next to the group heading, sub-collections from the parent’s context menu. A collection has a name and a colour (a hex code).
Deleting a collection does not delete its contents: the notes, documents and recordings stay and simply move to “No category”.
The bin
Section titled “The bin”The bin holds everything deleted anywhere in the app — notes, documents, recordings, tasks, projects, meetings, drawings and files. Every row carries a type badge, the deletion date, the size and “N days left”: items are kept for 30 days.
A click opens a read-only preview, a right click offers Restore and Delete permanently. The bin can be emptied in one go; the dialog names exactly how many files will disappear.
